You got into business to live on your own terms

Screen Shot 2019-04-12 at 9.53.53 AM.png

A quick tip on creating peace and plenty in business, the #happylittlepractice way:

2 years ago I said enough suffering quietly behind the scenes. Now I use the first week of January, after kids go back to school, to straighten my stuff out. My head game, my desk, my schedule, my sanity.

My clients, mostly moms, need this too.

Some of my clients’ kids don’t go back to school until the 7th! What the what!?! 😜 Breathe, enjoy and stay cool my friends. Remember you got into this to live life on your own terms, including your work sched. A few more days to organize yourself then game on.

You are in this for the long game my friend. I’m almost 20 years in and I’ve got at least another 20-30 more! So sure and steady progress it is... it beats fast and furious any day.

PS - Contrary to all the new year stuff, it doesn’t have to happen NOW.

Chunking down your message

IMG_0874.jpg

Here's a little behind-the-scenes from one of the recent calls with a potential client:

Me (asking a potential client): What ideas do you have for refocusing your coaching work?

Her (a health pro): I want to help moms not feel so stressed around their health with natural solutions.

Me: Let's chunk this down. And here's why...

"Stressed out" tends to be too vague, unfortunately.

It tends to land in "would be nice to solve someday-maybe" category.

It can make your work sound totally optional, instead of absolutely necessary to engage in.

Let's chunk down "stressed out" into specific stressful situations these women are in now.

Her: Well, I think the stress of being in her mid to late 40s

Me: What's going on in her mid to late 40s?

Her: Hormones, creeping weight gain, sleep issues, cognition decline from years of self neglect

Me: Let's keep chunking it down. These are all great choices that, individually, you could focus on.  Which one of these can you imagine spending all day talking about?

Her: I think hormones. If I work on their hormones, then their weight, sleep and brain functioning will get handled too.

Me: Okay, good. Let's slow down and just be with that for a minute. What does specializing in hormones feel like to you?

Her: Exciting.

Me: Okay, good. Let's keep going then.

Now let's chunk it down even more.

What kind of woman do you want to help with their hormones?

Her: Stay at home moms, perhaps?

Me: How about we chunk that down even more?

Here's a little bit of buying psychology I picked up in 19 years of coaching and studying and applying marketing wisdom.

Women tend to invest FOR OTHERS.

For example, they will invest on solving problems for their kids, family, their business, but not really themselves.

Unless they're over 55, and they're finally done with their care-taking obligations and feel "guilt free" about investing in themselves.

We women have been conditioned to put ourselves last and it shows up in our buying decisions.

Stay at home moms, is a tough category to offer services to beyond low priced options, in my opinion.

Unless, your message is about their kids, home, business or they're affluent enough to be investing in their physical appearance, mental health, etc...

So, if you're not going for women over 55, or a message geared towards taking care of something other than herself, let's pick a woman with a specific vocation that has a BIG reason for handling her hormones NOW. =

  • For example, women working in technology because you used to work in tech and understand that high-pressure background and how their personal performance is on the line.

  • For example, women with a business and a family because you know what it's like to have to be ON before work with the kiddos, and ON during work and ON after work. These women have no time to be sick.

  • For example, women in teaching who are struggling with depletion that is making them doubt they can get to retirement.

It has to be that specific.

Her: I could totally relate to the women with a business and a family life. That's me.

Me: Okay good! Now we can go look at your program and fix that program to speak to THIS woman and her specific HORMONE challenges, and how it's IMPACTING what's important to her.

In fact, since she's a woman with a business AND a family, you might want to think about how can you talk about hormones in a way that this woman sees this as an essential bottom line business expense and investment in her family... the two things she cares most about, right?

Her: Got it. So I've gone from "I want to help women not feel so stressed" to "I help women who have a family and a business, who want to handle their hormone issues naturally and avoid anti-depressants, hormone therapy and extended birth control as the only option to feeling better" (a recap from our extended conversation)

Me: Yes, and now you can make your program and your marketing speak to her and only her.

Her: Yes!

Chunking down your message is usually the first step to help my clients streamline and simplify their services and their marketing.

It doesn't have to take long.

Putting it all together after we honed in on the message is the PHASE 1 work of my coaching.

10 Weeks is all I need to restructure your coaching business or private practice.

From your message, who you work with, how you work with clients, how you charge and receive payment, to how people book their first appointment and more.

Then you can get back out there and take your marketing plan on the road and start monetizing your message and do the work you're meant to do. (That's PHASE 2)

Want help with this?

You must be ready to get started, make decisions and want to specialize your practice.

Are you a technician or expert?

IMG-0841.PNG

This weekend I decided to get some new clothing.

I live in the country and if I'm not shopping online, I really don't shop as the options are minimal.

So I thought to try out "Stitch Fix"; a service that sends you outfits and you keep only what you like.

Anyways, in Stitch Fix, I was prompted to create a "style profile" and there is a section for career.

I was struck by one of the choices:

"Health Practitioner / Technician”

I thought it was just something my clients and I talked about, but there you have it.

Even Stitch Fix sees health pros as "technicians."

Listen,"technician" is not how you want to position your coaching business or private practice

Nearly all of my clients, at first, are in the "technician" category before I help them reposition them into a qualified expert with a speciality coaching business.

Now by a speciality business, I don't mean redesigning my clients’ businesses to only work with an exclusive clientele, offer high-end pricing or lead with perfect hair and make up marketing.

You certainly don't need to be the most "expensive" option to move out of "technician" positioning.

However, if you want to go beyond technician-level messaging, pricing and service offerings, here are a few important distinctions to consider:

A technician offers hourly sessions.  An expert offers an experience that will solve a specific problem.

A technician charges by the hour. An expert charges for a complete start-to-finish solution and is paid-in-full, or by convenient payment plan.

A technician's income is limited by the hours in her day and the whims of her client base. An expert's income is based on a mutually agreed upon, client engagement and is not impacted by whims and "life stuff" like cancellations, rescheduling or disappearing acts.

A technician emphasizes her certifications and trainings as the main selling point. The expert emphasizes the relationship with her clients and the problem her ideal clients are determined to solve, and then backs it up with her expertise.

A technician takes all kinds of clients. An expert makes bold choices in who she works best with, so that she can feel confident about delivering a high quality experience.

A technician talks about her process. An expert talks about the before and after picture of her client's transformation.

A technician works for her clients, an organization, etc. An expert controls the terms of her work, be it in-house (as a consultant), or for an individual (as a coach/counselor/advisor/specialist).

A technician is often a generalist. An expert specializes gives up the trying to be all things to all people.

A technician reacts to what comes her way. An expert choses her response to the marketplace and dares to lead her practice and her clients.

We have ALL been trained to be a good technician.

To "hold the space" and see what the client wants and needs.

But that doesn't work in the real world, unless you're working for someone else.

Your clients, the economy and your sanity in business is calling for your leadership.

Not perfect leadership, but "perfecting as you go" leadership.

Aiming for perfect keeps you in your head.

As Tony Robbins once said: Stay in your head, you're dead.

Perfecting as you go has you taking action, trying things, seeing what works, what doesn't and adjusting as needed.

Here's to leading your practice into the future you wish to create,

Karin

Routines for Peace and Profit in Coaching

routinesforpeaceandprofit

Let's elevate your routines and results in professional coaching.

When you're just getting started in coaching or consulting, it's all about figuring out WHAT routines to implement in your work day.

When you're doing well in your coaching business, it's all about ELEVATING your routines to reignite your fire and prevent burn out.

I've got you covered on both fronts!

But I'll admit, "routines" do have a bad rap.

In my opinion, it's because we do them in an overly masculine way that leaves us feeling tight, cranky and anxious. And that's like putting yourself on a task diet. No thanks!

There's a better way...

Introducing a more balanced, feminine way that helps you GET IT DONE and leaves you feeling like a WOMAN at the end of the day.

Want in?

Join me for this free virtual class series about your coaching business routines and how I use therapeutic quality essential oils to bring it all home and make them stick.

All class times are for Fridays, at Noon Eastern.

CLASS 1 - March 22 - Elevate Your Everyday Work Schedule for Focus, Consistency and Calm

This is all about how I "open the shop", "run the shop" and "close the shop" on a typical work day, doing my marketing and coaching clients from my home office, as a "company of one." From what to do before you start your day, how I create new business in about 1 hour a day of marketing, how to reset your focus when you lose it, how to transition to mom life (I stop working at 3pm) and finally shift into spouse/personal time. I'll cover 5, super simple routines and how I use the essential oils to make them feel pleasurable, focused and yet very effective.

CLASS 2 - April 5 - Elevate Your Mental Game to Handle Business Challenges and Negative Self Talk

What I'll share with you in this class has quite literally saved my business more than once. I have two routines that take about 15 minutes to ensure you don't get stuck in your head about your marketing, your focus and the next right actions for you and your business. Bring a journal and paper to this one too!

CLASS 3 - May 3 - Elevate Your Sleep to Think Better, Feel Smarter and Do Better

Sleep is a KEYSTONE habit, especially for moms in coaching. If this one falls apart, I bet your brain gets foggy and everything in business starts to feel HARD. That said, it's not so easy to "turn off" the buzzing in your brain at night when you create for a living. Especially if you're daring to do something new! So I'll share my "power down" routine and essential oil practice to sleep deeply and train my brain to calm down. This is like bio-hacking your business.

CLASS 4 - June 7 - Elevate Your Moon Time to Double Your Courage and Energy to Do Big Things

Yes, I know, I'm going there. There is a way to manage your time to work WITH the energy currents you have going on and not against it. I SWEAR just doing this super simple routine during PMS and during my moon time, along with just ONE essential oil blend, helped to eliminate perimenopause symptoms, reduce mood swings and doubled my energy without doing much else. Seriously. I didn't change my diet or my exercise (which was nil at the time) and just this alone started to turn things around.

Now of course, I can't promise this will happen to you too. I'll give you the routines and frameworks, you'll have to apply them.

And I'll be referencing and can only vouch for doTERRA essential oils and their proven efficacy but please feel free to use whatever brand of oils you like.

If you don't have any essential oils, you can get some here:

http://karinrozell.com/essentials

I'll be sharing what specific oils I use with each class and it's respective routine.

And I promise, everything I will share will be simple and makes a big difference if you have to rely on yourself to get it done, day in and day out.

Whether you're an experienced coach and ready to level up your business, or you're a new coach or getting back into coaching after a break; or you just ready to spring clean your daily routines to help pull yourself forward, and increase the peace and profit in your personal economy, I've got you covered.

Join this event series and I'll keep you posted for the private Facebook Lives and option to call-in via a convenient tele-conference line, if you prefer listening on-the-go.

Karin's Interview in Wealth Warrior Summit

wealth_warrior_summit

I don’t say yes to most “summit” interview requests. .

Not because I think I’m too cool. .

It’s just the topics typically sound like more marketing hot air. .

But I said YES to this one. .

Two reasons to opt into this summit: .

1) I shared quite openly about set backs in business, how I define wealth vs how others might define it, my mindset for dealing with money worry, and even some best practices for saving and earning well with a #smallisthenewbig business model. .

2) It’s going to be chock full of different conversations about money management for entrepreneurs.

We don’t have regular jobs, and a “regular” money management conversation won’t do.

Do I really have to do that to succeed in coaching

Screen Shot 2019-04-12 at 9.39.09 AM.png

A quick tip on creating peace and plenty in business, the #happylittlepractice way:

I hear that a lot... “I thought I had to do all the big branding, big marketing and I didn’t really want a big business. Do I really have to do all is that?”

No, but you for sure have to do a few things:

Talk about a compelling problem you solve (not 6, one) a group of people you specialize in serving supremely well (so you know exactly where to find them), a way of getting in front of them regularly (not occasionally), a clear invitation to a consultative appointment where you can diagnose what’s missing/what need to be done and show them the way out of their problem; a way to solve the problem you claim to solve with a clear start to finish program. And a way to keep in touch regularly with the emails you collect along your Marketing journey. That’ll do it.

It ain’t easy peasy, but come on! Having a successful little business was never meant to be easy peasy. But if you keep it simple, it becomes doable. And what’s doable, you can become consistent at. And it’s so worth it. #smallisthenewbig #boutiquebusiness

One thing at a time

Screen Shot 2019-04-12 at 9.36.59 AM.png

A quick tip on creating peace and plenty in business, the #happylittlepractice way:

I have my clients and myself, focus on one thing at a time. At least until their marketing is solid and creating clients. It’s so unnerving but it works so much better, and allows for the big picture of life too: kids, family, snow days, sick days, etc. It’s a lot like becoming a minimalist in a world that says do it all, be everywhere, be all things to all people. Crazy town. There’s a better way. One thing at a time gets you there. #sanityinbusiness #boutiquebusiness#smallisthenewbig

Math + Method = Magic in Coaching

Math + Method

Ever wonder how the magic happens in a coaching business?

You know, the magic of creating an income that supports your family in the way that you'd hope?

The kind of magic where your spouse is no longer annoyed with your coaching business because you can be counted on for making a serious contribution to your family?

And the kind of magic that has you feeling truly rich, because you've streamlined your work hours and can actually enjoy your time off without constantly thinking you've not done enough?

Here's how I teach this for women in coaching.

Fair warning, these women are not trying to build an empire and they also enjoy not working.

Here it is: MATH + METHOD = MAGIC

THE MATH

Don't worry, you just need elementary school math for this.

Jot the following down:

1. How much did you earn in your coaching business last year?

This is essential to know so you can create a realistic plan.

In the applications I receive to talk about working with me, I sometimes see  "magical" thinking.

IE "I'm making 6K per year and need to earn 250K by the end of this summer."

Not gonna happen.

Just get real, get honest, and jot it down.

The coaching field is rife with quick fix marketing promises that unintentionally lead coaches into thinking they can create 100K per year without doing the work required to get there, over a course of a few years.

2. How much is "enough" for you?

How much do you need and want to earn for your family?

How much is your "enough" that you live well, but probably aren't renting a private jet?

This is when we start to discern from "the dream" to real life.

And, this is where we clarify the difference between long term goals (year 3-5 income goal) and short term goal (what's doable this year).

Here are a few examples...

A client with a newborn says, "okay, I want to earn 85K per year when my kids go to elementary school in about 5 years, or I'll have to get a job and that's what I used to earn."

Cool. We work backwards from that 5 year goal, and start with what's doable this year given her time, energy, know-how and new skills she will need to develop.

Another mom I work with, with grown children, earns in the mid 6-figures selling products and her income goal is ADDING a new coaching income stream of 50K. For her, that's about 16 new clients. Doable with her existing business.

Yet another mom, who is working full-time at a job she's so ready to leave, we talk about what's possible in 2-4 years of focused effort and using her "job-job" to fund her transition into coaching over time. And, what's likely achievable for this year (breaking even to landing on a number that would giver her confidence to cut back at her full-time gig).

So you see, each of these women have different "annual" goals based on their starting point.

And they are all correct.

You can't get to your annual goal without assessing what you've accomplished in the past year and answering the question, "how much is enough?"

3. Decide how much do you want to earn THIS year?

Whatever number you land on, it needs to make sense given where you're starting.

This includes the time you have available to work and, it should stretch you just enough to make you sit up and pay attention, but not so much that you ignore your health, family and personal life.

Keep this in mind...

It's much easier to go to 50K when you've already reached 20K.

And it's MUCH easier to jump to 75K after you've hit 40K.

And at 75K it's not a far stretch to go to 100K.

And from there, you can more easily go for 100K or even 200K.

Where are you in this? It's a bit different for each person.

Sure, there are ways to fast track this, but I find most coaches can't afford the advertising budget, technology infrastructure and team to pull that off.

4. How many clients will you need to create in TOTAL to hit your annual income goal.

I suggest in total because while I teach my clients to aim for about 3 new clients per month (in the #happylittlepractice model I teach), unless someone already has a client base, there's a ramp up period of time to get your marketing working and generating clients.

Ramp up time may be just a few weeks or months, or 12 to 18 months depending on skill level, self-discipline, time, energy, ability to focus, your willingness to market, etc.

Then figure out about how many clients that is per month?

Now, how many free sessions or first appointments (I call these "breakthrough sessions") will you need to do to create those clients?

The general coaching average is 25% of free sessions become clients.

This is part art and science and "conversion rates" differs with experience, the urgency and relevancy of your message to your chosen ideal clients, confidence in your work, capability and proof (quality testimonials) that your work "works", marketing in place, etc.

In Happy Little Practice, I find conversion rates are much higher (closer to 50% and higher), because each pro has a speciality business and isn’t a generalist. And provided the coach/practitioner/expert has some sales and marketing skill.

All of this works best when your clients are in start to finish programs, and not hourly sessions or small packages of sessions.

Let's do an example.

Say you earned 30K in the past year (We'll keep the math super simple.)

Perhaps you're ready to go to 45K this year while managing family life and personal stuff. (No business grows inside of a vacuum, undistracted and un-impacted by sick days, snow days, and life. Unless, you have a stay-at-home spouse or full-time nanny taking care of this, but still, it impacts those folks too.)

That's 30 clients at $1500 per client in one calendar year = 45K.

And that comes to about 3 clients per month.

Or, that's 15 clients at $3000 per client, or about 1 - 2 clients per month.

This is where you do some "tinkering" to get something that feels doable (honors where you're starting from) but is a bit of a stretch too, and makes you feel excited to achieve.

5. Work out what this comes to per MONTH, and per QUARTER.

For example, the 45K a year is $3750 per month, or $11,250 per QUARTER.

I like knowing this because it chunks down the annual goal into segments that feel within reach and keep me focused.

Keep tinkering with all of this until you are crystal clear what you'll do with the remaining 3 Quarters of the year ahead. (Yep, the first quarter is just about done!)

Or, if you like, start working on your personal economy NOW, with goals starting April of this year to April of next year, if that works better for you.

Start where you are.

It's not too late.

THE METHOD

This is HOW you'll create the math.

a) What you'll do in your marketing that puts you in front of your ideal clients (not optional).

b) What you'll do for a "keep in touch" (like an email newsletter, also not optional).

c) And what that will look like day in and day out (the daily tasks and how you'll use your time).

For my clients, we just do a few things:

• We speak to create clients (the Great Little Talks Method).

You don't have to, there are other ways to market, but it's what works best for most coaches without funds to invest in advertising, funnels, telesummits, promotional campaigns and the like.

And so that's what I teach. It works for "the rest of us."

• We keep in touch via our email newsletters that back our message up and scoop up the folks who weren't quite ready at our great little talks.

• We do that in one "golden hour" of marketing per work day.

• And we manage our fears, worries and concerns with about 15 minutes to 30 minutes each day of a "golden hour primer" - aka a mindset clearing practice.

This is sacred time to tidy up your brain and cultivate the habit of thinking-feeling-acting on purpose. I teach my clients how to do this too. And this too is not optional. I've noticed that those who don't do this always, and only always, change their direction in their coaching business at the first hiccup or just don't need to make money, and therefore can afford to just follow their whims.

That's it.

The MATH (the numbers) + METHOD (the how) = Magical life.

It LOOKS magical.

People say things like...

You're so lucky to change lives for a living!

Or, oh you're so lucky to stop working at 3pm to pick up kids at the bus stop.

Or, how lucky you are that you get to work from home.

It looks like magic.

But it's math + method (mindset management, energy management, marketing, daily tasks) that create a seemingly magical life.

Fair warning: All of this works when you have ONE clear message that is super relevant to ONE audience, and you have ONE start to finish way of working with people that demonstrates you can solve the problem they want solved.

That's the only way I can vouch for this approach: A systematic elimination of vagueness about what problem you solve and for whom and how you do what you do.

If you want help with this, and you'd find comfort and clarity in creating a plan that will get you where you want to go in step by step fashion, get in touch or learn more about the Happy Little Practice Club

The #happylittlepractice method isn't for everyone.

But you know if it's for you if a) you love to work, but also love not working, b) you don't need to be internet famous or build an empire and, c) you have a life you want to tend to so you like to work about 25 focused hours a week.

Hope this helpful!

Karin

PS - This is the kind of stuff I go deep with my clients, and it's a little tricky to squeeze into one little blog post. But hopefully you'll see the framework and can "tinker" with to make it your own.

PPS - Shouldn't I have sent this in January, when everyone is planning their big goals for the year? Maybe. But lately, I've noticed that my clients are losing that "new year" high and their focus is getting wobbly. March is a great time to refocus and clean up how you're leading your business. This should help.
